Encounters Art Space: An Innovation Intensive Organisation
In 2010 we decided to start an enterprise that would give us experiential insights into what it took to become an innovative organisation. We needed to be embedded in finding opportunities and creating a better future. For centuries artists, designers and makers have occupied this space. Our decision was to open Encounters Art Space as our 'Lab' with a mission to contribute to one of Europe's largest mixed-media artistic events, the Brighton Festival.
Participating for nine years provided unique learning opportunities. We realised that human qualities are quintessentially important. There must be a shared commitment to move forward, and overcome obstacles, amongst the leadership team. When talented people participate then a salon forms and unexpected but good things happen. There must be structure but this comes alive when there is a relentless determination from those in leadership roles.
Success makes a difference. Encounters Art Space is in friendly competition with 200 other similar ventures. In 2012, we were judged the winner and we have been in the top three for the last five years. The benefits of being successful include a sense that 'we can do do this'. This provides a confidence to be bold and sets standards that grow higher with each annual show.
